HF bands has been very silent for past weeks. Soon all hams are waiting for propagation improving on high end of HF bands as on 15, 12 and 10 m as well on 6m VHF. Time to change over all antennas, which has not been real puncher in pile ups. What to buy or build after long experience of DX:ing? * To choose single band, mono band Yagi or Log Periodic or Quad; Basically you must set question: Do I need to waste time or do I need to be on DXCC honor roll list. * Monoband antenna is way to work fast DX station and / or to be at top of contest results. Which one I would choose: Yagi or Quad. Yagi is more sure in hard winter and usually stronger than homebrew Quad. Yagi in my experience was better to keep frequency clean of European friends, who came to same frequency or near by. Quad has been way to work DX before others when band is getting open as my experience has been behind many years, Usually I think " I need both, yagi and quad". Picture above tells difference. Both antennas are 2 wavelength high. I made this to understand, why I got better reports on quad compared to yagi. In comparison I have done over 200 h work to find good 15,55 db gain in free space / and on my ground it should give over 20 dBi gain. This 10 ele yagi has very capabilities and performance to be "king of the band". Then I have done work to find very good 4 ele quad on 8 corner loops and compared also Timo´s OH3GIF done many calculations. That way I was sure, that I have good enough reference to develop best 4 ele Quad. * Look at patterns: If you calculate all radiation surface of vertical batter as sum of radiation, you could see, that 4 ele Elstar Super Quad is even better than best 10 ele yagi I would say.
